Zoey has really taken to blogging. She asked me to help her create a blog just for and about her and other canines. She says she wants to spotlight dogs like her. So there is no time like the present to start the New Year off with www.Zoeytherescue.blogspot.com

Zoey wants to remind you that there are tons of animals that need a FUREVER home. Also shelters need donations not only monetary but many other items too. She says to take in consideration that there are lots of humans who donate to wonderful, much-needed causes to help humans but there is not enough humans that donate to help save animals.

Slowly the snow melts...

Mama hates snow. We walk along our route and the next thing I know she is kicking the snow! No one knows why she does it, even she doesn't know. She says she is tired of looking at it. I still like jumping in it; climbing the high drifts, and sticking my face in it. Not her.

Here I am a few snow storms ago...this particular picture I have snow on my face. You never know what good junk you are going to find hidden in the snow. My treasures so far mount to old  lottery tickets, banana peel, construction glove, juice bottle, someone's lunch trash (Mama had to really fight with me to get that one away from my mouth). Odd, all that work struggling with me to be top dog and she didn't even eat the lunch! Humans, who can figure them out?

Incognito--that is why you can't see my eyes.
I don't want anyone to recognize me
wearing Sierra's sweater.

Dad, you never know what goodies you will find.
Come on, put your snout in the snow
and sniff around.

But really, Dad, you need some fun.
Do we have to go home?
Please just 5 minutes more; I am begging; just 5 minutes.

Shoes are made for walking...

...and not eating

Mama never even had the opportunity to wear her new shoes.
You can imagine how silly she felt about leaving the closet door open.
I took advantage of the invitation and grabbed myself a pair of shoes
when she wasn't paying attention to me.
Dad took my side reminding Mama that she has
to be more conscientious about things since I joined the family.

Most of the leather filled my belly and I didn't even get sick!

Hugs to all on Valentine's Day

My first Valentine's Day in my new home.

Come on pooches, hug everyone in your family.

I will be giving my Mama & Dad a 3-way hug
and Mama will be telling me "off."
I still don't know what she means by "off"
but she continues to say it to me.

Licks to all the dogs in our family
(even though I haven't met one yet).

Best in Show is… Sky!

The 138th annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show went down last night at Madison Square Garden in NYC.

After all was said and done, which pooch came out on top?? The winner of the prestigious Best in Show is… Sky! The wire fox terrier!! Sky beat out an Irish water spaniel, a cardigan Welsh corgi, a Portuguese water dog, a bloodhound, a miniature pinscher and a standard poodle! In all, there were 2,845 doggies competing for the top prize, but Sky beat them all. What's amazing about Sky is that she's already won 128 best in show titles during her career! A wire fox terrier has won a whopping FOURTEEN times, a feat done by no other breed! We'd have picked her to win based solely off the extreme amounts of cuteness blasting out of this pretty pooch!

And, even more heartwarming is that one of the contestants in the inaugural competition was Emma, a mixed-breed dog who was rescued by her owner Christy Wrede, just before being put down at a kill shelter! WOW! As we mentioned, this was the first time the Westminster Dog Show included mixed breeds! Aw!

Congrats on the big win, Sky!!

Sky is America’s top dog

The 5-year-old female — whose full name is “GCh. AfterAll Painting the Sky” — beat a field that included a standard poodle, a Portuguese water dog and a bloodhound. This was a record 14th time that a wire fox terrier has won at the nation’s top dog show.

“They were bred to look for trouble so they’re always on their toes out there,” Westminster Kennel Club Director of Communications and longtime WKC Dog Show TV co-host David Frei said of the terrier breed. “It’s their world and we’re just living in it and I think that gives them a little extra edge in the show ring.”

Frei appeared on “Good Morning America” today along with Sky, who proved to be frisky and friendly during her morning show appearance. “She’s got this little extra something, as you can see,” Frei said.Sky has won 129 best in show awards and was ranked as the country’s No. 1 show dog last year. “This is just another day at the office for her,” said Frei.

Sky topped the 2,845 dogs entered in the show. They were eligible in 190 breeds and varieties. The standard poodle named Ally was chosen as the runner-up.

“They couldn’t have this kind of success if they didn’t love it,” Frei said of the dogs who competed.

Sky’s owners are Victor Malzoni Jr. and Torie Steele, and her handlers are Gabriel and Ivonne Rangel. An overjoyed Gabriel Rangel stood with Sky following Tuesday’s title.“I’m so proud of her. … There’s no words to describe this,” he told a reporter with USA Network, which broadcast the show.

Beyond the dog show circuit, Sky knows how to have fun, too. In July, she was photographed wearing a shaggy wig and tinted glasses.

She even has a Twitter account — @Skywirefox.

According to the Press-Enterprise of Riverside, Calif., Sky’s owners plan to retire her following Tuesday’s title.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

PS... I am forever top dog in my house!!!!!

Meet my cousin, Athena

Mama posted Athena's picture with all our other loved canines. I haven't met Athena but Mama tells me she is tiny and adorable. She said Athena loves to be cuddled like a baby. Well, I do too. It isn't my fault I can't sit on Mama's lap; my size doesn't stop me from trying though.

I know I won't be meeting Athena until I improve my manners. I still haven't met my nephews either.

Sunday I meet the prospective trainer, Jeff, for an eval. I hope that doesn't hurt! I just got a rabies shot and that probably did hurt but I was too scared to feel it. Mama says I am NOT the alpha in the pack and I better learn that very quickly. Or else...

Tricky Tray

Mama and her friends support this event. They have lots of fun. Mama says it is the best Tricky Tray she ever went to. Maybe it is because she won 2 baskets last year. No, I think it is because this is the rescue squad that Sierra, Jackson, and Louie were adopted from.

I am so glad Mama wasn't able to get another dog from them because if she did I wouldn't be living the sweet life with my family. I have to admit that I am a little spoiled.

Please think about joining in the fun or sending a donation.

Awesome

Kaley Cuoco was recently on the Ellen Show and she shared some interesting information about what her Pitbull likes to do. You won’t believe it, and this is sure to make you LOL.

Disagree

Mama and I are not in agreement when it comes to snow. I love it and enjoy jumping in it and climbing the sky-high mountains of the white stuff in the development. She hates it. She also said no respectable beach girl likes snow. I guess I am not respectable!

Tatortot the Amazing Pit Bull

Mama loves Tator Tot. She follows his adventures on FB. He calls his mother "Mama" like I do.  I hear her telling Dad about him. She says he is a terrific dog. Should I be jealous? Nah, we both were lucky to find good, loving homes and great people to share our lives with.

PS His name is spelled Tator Tot. It is misspelled in the article.

Pit bull saves woman's son just days

after she rescued dog

from scheduled death

Rescued pit bull rescues 4-year-old — less than a week after woman saves dog from death.

A Minneapolis woman saved a pit bull mere hours before his scheduled death and the canine quickly returned the favor by saving her son's life less than a week later.

Christi Smith only planned to keep Tater Tot until she could find a home for him but the perceptive pooch became a permanent part of the family when he alone realized that Smith's 4-year-old boy Peyton Anderson was not well, reported Fox affiliate KMSP.
"He kept on whining and barking and running between the two of us," Smith told the station. "I checked on him, and he was barely breathing."

Tater Tot sensed that 4-year-old Peyton Anderson was not well, and “kept on whining and barking" until the boy’s mom noticed something was wrong.

Smith rushed Peyton to the emergency room where doctors reportedly found out the boy had dangerously low blood sugar.

"He just seemed kind of weird," said Smith. "He wasn't really coherent — deliriously tired."

Isis Sanchez or the Blue Pearl Veterinary Clinic explained that canines' exceptional sense of smell, which can be trained for bomb and drug detection, likely helped Tater Tot sniff out ketones, a compound that is often created when blood sugar is low.

Tater Tot and Peyton Anderson play together after dog saves the young boy’s life.

"When you go into ketosis, an acid state in the body, your body doesn't have sufficient sugar," Sanchez said. "His blood sugar was dangerously low and he was almost comatose (according to his mother)."

She said that even humans can sometimes smell ketones on someone's breath, so for Tater Tot — if this was in fact what he sensed — it must have been particularly pronounced.

Minneapolis Animal Care and Control said that Tater Tot was adopted from Ruff Start Rescue.

Can Pets Make Us Better People?

Need therapy? Try a pet (Getty Images)The guy who leaves his dog's poop outside of my house every morning notwithstanding, having a pet may actually help you become a better person, according to new research published in the Journal of Applied Developmental Science.

While more than 20 years of science has looked at the health benefits humans reap from having a pet, including lowering blood pressure and anxiety and preventing allergies in kids, until now, not much research has been done on the impact animals have on their owners' character. This recent work found that caring for a pet increased empathy, leadership, and social engagement. "As the field of how human and animal health interact becomes more rigorous, people are starting to discover how important pets are in our lives," author Megan K. Mueller, who is a developmental psychologist and a professor at the Tufts School of Veterinary Medicine, tells Yahoo Shine.

Mueller has worked with Tufts Paws for People – a program that brings therapy animals (including her own black lab, Jett) into nursing homes, afterschool reading classes, hospitals, and other settings where they can provide a little companionship and affection – and recently helped set up a campus event where students were invited to de-stress during final exams with four therapy dogs. The organizers expected 30 kids, and were surprised when 200 showed up. "The students told us how much they missed their pets and how much they helped them unwind," says Mueller, who adds that although there has been a lot of research showing the benefits of animals for children in a therapeutic environment, she wanted to investigate the kind of good stuff that happens between people and their pets in everyday life.

The study looked at data collected from more than 500 adults aged 18 to 26 and found that those who cared for pets were likely to help their friends and families and be active in their communities. It also found that those who said they had a strong attachment to their pets as teens showed more confidence and empathy in general. "[The] findings suggest that individuals who are highly involved in caring for an animal or participating in an animal-focused activity are also contributing more broadly to their families, communities, and schools, an important aspect of becoming an active and engaged member of the community."
Mueller stresses that the findings reveal a correlation (not a cause), and further investigation still needs to be done. "We have to tease out what the processes and mechanisms are. For instance, do people want to have pets because they enjoy taking care of others?" The work also suggests that the social skills that humans develop through being with animals may translate to how they interact with other people.

About 68 percent of American families include at least one animal, and Mueller points out that simply having an animal around does not guarantee a psychological or emotional bonus. And since, in some households, pets are neglected, mistreated, or worse, whether or not people actively nurture their pets makes all the difference. If parents are considering getting a family pet, it makes sense to ensure that children participate in their care, says Mueller. "It's not just about the presence of the animals; it's about the quality and nature of that relationship."

Yikes, Mama was sitting right there...

Gratefully Mama and Dad were able to work from home during today’s snow accumulation. Sister also worked from home. Not brother, he had to go out and brave the snow. Two more storms are threatening us but at least today’s is over at the time of this post. Mama keeps saying she is going to get a voodoo doll and call it “winter” and stick pins in. I don’t understand the connection; sometimes humans don’t make any sense whatsoever.

Mama was so engrossed in her work that she didn't bother to look down to see what I was gnawing on. She assumed it was my antler (oh how I love that antler) but I was saving that for later. When she finally decided to give me a loving pat on the head she was surprised to see that I not only chewed one chair leg but I attempted to eat all three!

She was totally embarrassed since she was sitting on the chair and never took the time to see what I was up to. So today’s mischief is the result of both of us not doing the right thing.

Mama sprayed that stinky stuff on the chair legs to keep me away. I have to wait to see how long the scent lingers. I might want to try to sharper my teeth again on the chair.
