Zoey has really taken to blogging. She asked me to help her create a blog just for and about her and other canines. She says she wants to spotlight dogs like her. So there is no time like the present to start the New Year off with www.Zoeytherescue.blogspot.com

Zoey wants to remind you that there are tons of animals that need a FUREVER home. Also shelters need donations not only monetary but many other items too. She says to take in consideration that there are lots of humans who donate to wonderful, much-needed causes to help humans but there is not enough humans that donate to help save animals.

Big, big dogs!

I see these dogs running behind my deck all the time. They never bark at me; just stay perfectly still and stare at me until the leader runs and then they all follow. Some times I see them on my walk; the other day I saw one with gigantic antlers...hmm, why don't I have antlers? I consider myself a "big dog."

They are really big dogs and I would love to play with them! Maybe they will eventually come up on my deck.

Again, the bad dog

I just could not help myself today. The morning started at 6:45, which is early for Mama, I was able to let myself out of my house because she didn't close the door completely the night before (first mistake she made). I am full of energy in the morning so I ran up the steps and jumped on top of her. She was stunned and not at all happy. She took a few looks at me before she realized, yes, I am really here.

She immediately jumped out of bed and took me outside for me to perform my morning ritual (usually Dad does this round but he was in the shower). We return and I immediately run upstairs to Mama's room (we play ball every night in there). The door was opened so in I went (second mistake Mama made). Mama stayed downstairs to have breakfast and I heard her complaining that her routine was off today because of me. She acts like I woke her in the middle of the night, which I could have because she didn't secure the door.

Shortly afterward Mama calls me down for breakfast. I am not one bit interested in my breakfast, which is highly out of character. I live for food! Mama starts to get worried thinking I am not feeling well. She says to Dad, "Zoey is acting strangely but not sickly. What could be wrong?" Of course, Dad looks at her puzzled and doesn't respond.

Although I am not going near my food bowl, she tries to trick me by giving me the Cheerios that I get every morning. It is a game we play. I love getting Cheerios and never turn my nose up at those little round things. Not this morning though. So now the kitchen floor is covered with Cheerios (third mistake Mama makes).  Mama then says to me, "Okay, you are not eating and you don't look sick so you did something you were not suppose to do." Inwardly, I start shaking in my paws...how does she know? She wasn't watching me, so how can she figure this out?  She starts looking around the living and dining rooms...nothing is out of the ordinary...she is on a mission to find the mischief I got into.

She starts to go upstairs and usually I am always one step behind or in front of her, sometimes she tells me she is going to fall on me. Not today though...I figure it is better for me if I rest myself down on the landing and hope she doesn't find the mess I created.

Within seconds, I realize hope went out the window really fast because she is screaming "bad dog...bad dog!" I don't have a clue who she is calling, who the heck is bad dog, I didn't see any other dog here today. She can't mean me because my name is Zoey aka Zo-Zo.

She comes to the steps and stares at me with that not so friendly face. She calls me up to inspect the damage the bad dog did. Yikes, one new wonderfully soft blanket torn to shreds!

I know bad dog didn't do it but I was wondering how I could blame it on the so-called bad dog. I tried looking sheepishly at Mama, then I tested my sorry persona, but she wasn't buying it.

Fourth mistake Mama made was leaving the blanket where I could reach it. I quickly decided it was best for me to run down the steps two at a time and head for my house instead of trying to point out all her mistakes that lead to the blanket in pieces on the floor.

She really should be more careful about her belongings! You never know when a "bad dog" is going to pay a visit.

PS: The picture of the couch I am laying on once had a skirt around it. I don't think I have to give you anymore details about the absence of the skirt--hint--it went the same way as the blanket and the shoes and the slippers.

Police dogs are often the unsung heroes in situations like the one in France. .

Mama says, this dog's life was worth more than each and every member of ISIS.

Diesel, have fun in heaven. Mama says it is a wonderful place but we are not in a rush to get there.

I've turned my own name around

Copied from FB:
Saving Furry Friends,Inc

When God had made the earth and sky,
The flowers and the trees,
He made all the animals,
The fish, the birds and bees.

When at last He finished,
Not one was quite the same.
He said, "I'll walk this world of mine
And give each one a name".

He traveled far and wide,
and everywhere He went,
A little creature followed Him,
Until it's strength was spent.

When all were named upon the earth,
In the sky and in the sea,
A little creature said, "Dear Lord,
There's not one left for me".

Kindly, the Father said to him,
"I've left you to the end".
"I've turned my own name around
And have called you Dog, my friend!"

George & Amal Clooney Adopted A Shelter Dog Named Millie

One very lucky Bassett Hound...

Animal Welfare Editor, The Huffington Post

A dog found begging for scraps outside a California restaurant just got adopted by George and Amal Clooney.

Millie is a 4-year-old Bassett hound who came into the San Gabriel Valley Humane Society earlier this month, having been discovered outside a local restaurant called the Macho Café.

The couple first saw Millie's picture on Petfinder, and then showed up at the shelter to meet her, says shelter spokesperson Lynn Collmann.

"It definitely added to the excitement on one of our busiest afternoons when we do vaccinations for the public," Collmann says.

A spokesman for George Clooney confirmed that the couple adopted Millie from the shelter "and they love her."

The Clooneys brought their other doggie Louie as well, to make sure that he and Millie would get along. They spent an hour and a half playing, and asking questions of (thrilled) shelter staff.
"They took the time to get to know her and vice versa, making sure she was a good fit for their other rescue dog, and would be a good family member," says Collmann.

With a rags-to-riches story worthy of Hollywood, Millie then left the shelter a Clooney.

Adopting a shelter pet is one of the kindest things

you can do, in my book.

Thanks for adopting, not shopping.

Mama's grandboy, my nephew

Dexter got a new stuffie from his Aunt Denise.
I got nothing!
Dexter has a lot more toys than I do.
Maybe it is because I murder my stuffies
and he carries his around the huse?
Now give me a Kong ball and I will play
with that until Mama takes it away for the night.
Those super balls are really pitbull strong!

I wonder what Dexter is wearing? He can't be cold.
Oh wait, I forgot my brother keeps his house's
temperature like an igloo.

Glad this doesn't only happen to me...

I can relate to this poor fellow! This happens to me when I try cuddling with one of those stuffed toys Mama gives me. Doesn't she know you can't trust those things? By now she should know better because her bedroom floor often looks like this poor pup's room.

This dog could be my brother from another mother. He or she looks like me but in the brown version.

Dog Food Recalls--3 more

Dog Owners, Check Your Pup’s Food! Three More Recalls Have Been Issued!

Three new recalls are effecting dog food across the country, bringing the number of recalls to 22 this year (as opposed to 10 in 2014), a depressing and frightening statistic.

The latest food to be recalled is OC Raw Dog of California. The company recalled 640 pounds of its Chicken, Fish & Produce Raw Frozen Canine Formulation due to salmonella contamination. The 6.5-pound Doggie Dozen Patties, 4-pound Doggie Sliders and 3-pound Meaty Rox with the lot number 1819, and use by date of 05/05/16 are all being recalled, although they were only distributed in Colorado, Vermont, and Pennsylvania through independent and specialty retailers. Make sure to check your food, and contact OC Raw Dog if you purchased potentially contaminated food!

The second recall is for Good n’ Fun Beefhide Chicken Sticks, which were sold at Dollar General and Dollar Tree stores across the country. These treats are also potential salmonella risks. While no illnesses have been reported (yet), if you have a package of the treats stamped with Lot #AO15010; expiration date of 03/2018; UPC code 0 91093 82247 1, make sure to get rid of them!

While salmonella tends to be the reason for the majority of recalls recently, Dingo Chip Twists Chicken in the Middle dog treats are being recalled after amantadine was found to potentially be contaminating the treats. Amantadine is an antiviral medication meant for humans, and is absolutely not approved for use in pet foods. The treats were made in China, and sold in Washington, California, Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, and Wisconsin. Make sure to keep an eye out!

If you have purchased any of these products, you can contact the FDA to get more information on what to do with potentially contaminated items.

To report a pet food complaint, you can go to the FDA’s pet food complaint page, and you can also contact a Consumer Complaint Coordinator.

As we head towards the end of the year, we can only hope that the staggering number of recalls doesn’t have any new additions. However, if there are any more complaints, we will make sure to update you! Stay safe!

7 Things You Should NEVER Do to Your Dog

Don't Ever Do These Things to Your Dog

By Carol Bryant

Dedicated dog parents are some of the most incredible people in the world. But even the most caring dog moms and dog dads sometimes do things that just aren’t in the best interests of their four-legged companions. Do you do any of these things? Read on and share in the comments which mistakes you have made and add your own cautionary advice.

Leave a Dog Alone in the Car

Even when the weather is relatively cool, a car can quickly become a greenhouse of sorts and cause your dog to become overheated and sick. If left alone for too long, a dog can even die. No matter the weather or season, a dog alone in a car is a target for thieves. Dogs should never be left alone in an unattended vehicle.

Make a Dog Live on a Chain

Yes, all dogs should have access to the outdoors. Yes, if you don’t have access to a fenced yard it is sometimes perfectly fine to tether a dog outside for a period of time as long as the weather is good and the dog is supervised. But dogs should never be forced to live their lives on a chain. Dogs need human interaction and stimulation, to be part of a family, and a measure of freedom. Being left out on a chain while the rest of your family is together indoors is simply cruel.

Neglect Your Dog's Teeth

The American Veterinary Medical Association's (AVMA) president, Dr. Ted Cohn, has stated that although daily tooth brushing is advised for dogs and cats, only 2 percent of dog owners follow through. In addition, 65 percent of dogs with stage one periodontal disease often go untreated. Always have a veterinarian check your dog’s teeth at least once a year and prior to starting any home-based dental regimen. Get into the habit of regular dental care. A child’s toothbrush is best for newcomers and dogs with smaller mouths. A fingertip toothbrush is also acceptable for starters. Never use human toothpaste on a dog. Why? They can’t spit, and there are ingredients in many human toothpastes that can make a dog sick.

Hit a Dog

Putting your hand(s) on a dog as a form of punishment is wrong. It will harm your relationship with your dog and prevent proper training.

In her book, It’s Me or the Dog, Victoria Stilwell, famed positive reinforcement trainer and star of her own dog behavior show on Animal Planet, writes, “When you hit a dog, you teach him to fear you, break his trust, and you weaken his confidence. Insecure dogs are the ones who are more likely to lash out in an aggressive display.”

Assume Your Dog Doesn't Have Feelings

Dogs feel—they have emotions and they understand emotions. Recent scientific studies have shown that dogs experience love like humans and can read human emotions based on facial expressions. Dogs have the capacity to love, feel, become depressed, and get excited. Berating a dog or purposely upsetting him harms the dog and your relationship with him.

Skip Veterinary Visits

This may sound like a “no brainer” but there are some people who believe they can self-diagnose their dog’s health problems online and not seek veterinary care. There is a time and a place for online research or to look up additional medical information for a beloved pet. But if a dog acts out of the ordinary or there are any symptoms of poor health, seeking veterinary care is of utmost importance. Never take medical matters into your own hands.

New York City Throws Last Surviving 9/11 Rescue Dog Adorable Sweet 16 Birthday Party

by JENNA MULLINS

An American hero got the birthday party she so greatly deserved, thanks to the city of New York.

Bretagne, the last known surviving search and rescue dog who worked ground zero on Sept. 11 and during the aftermath, is turning 16 very soon. BarkPost and 1 Hotel Central Park knew she deserved a special celebration, so they flew Bretagne and her handler Denise Corless from Texas Task Force 1 to NYC to honor the duo.

The devastating attacks on 9/11 were their first mission together, and Corless says that she and Bretagne now have a bond that will never be broken.

For her special day in the city, Bretagne was greeted at the airport in style. Then she checked into her doggy suite at 1 Hotel Central Park and enjoyed room service. Then it was off to Times Square to see a special billboard dedicate to Bretagne. She also got to frolic in the water (her favorite) at Hudson River Park.

Finally, she was taken to her birthday party at the hotel and received tons of presents and cake.

1 Hotel Central Park also donated $1,000 to Texas Task Force 1 so they could continue to train search and rescue dogs just like Bretagne.

Bretagne and Denise worked many other disasters sites together since 9/11, including Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Ivan. Bretagne retired from work when she was 9, but she now visits schools to help first-graders and special needs children learn how to read aloud.

Thank you to Bretagne and to all the rescue workers who came to aid the victims of the devastating attacks on 9/11. You are true American heroes.

Check out the videos:

Today our nation remembers the victims of the terrorists attack on the World Trade Center in 2001, as well as the responders who risked their lives at Ground Zero trying to rescue those trapped in the rubble. And one of those workers, who also happens to be four-legged and extremely furry, is being honored for her tireless efforts on that tragic day.

For the first time since that devastating September morning, the last known living 9/11 search and rescue dog, a 15-year-old golden retriever named Bretagne, has returned to the memorial site with her handler, Denise Corliss.

THANK YOU BRETAGNE

I spent the last 6 days playing and nagging Mama's great nephew Shawn and niece Kyla. We had lots of fun together. Mama said she enjoyed hosting the young pups--they played miniature golf, went to the boardwalk and rode the amusement rides, won some prizes, enjoyed plenty of milk shakes (Kyla says Mama makes the best shakes), rode bikes, went to the pool most days, swam in the bay (until the green-headed flies started biting them; if there is a bug around, it will find my Mama), spent a few hours at National Town Night and met Darth Vader and some storm troopers, along with playing laser tag, and viewing some awesome old cars. All in all, everyone had lots of fun.

Although I didn't take part in any of the above activities I still loved sharing my house with them because they played ball with me, rubbed my belly, got soaking wet with the hose (oh how I love that long yellow hose), and paid lots of attention to little ole hyper me, even when I barked at them for no reason and jumped all over them and made them scream. That's when I would hear Mama yell--"Zoey, get off of them!"

I love those kids and summer fun.

Mama, when are they coming back?
