Zoey has really taken to blogging. She asked me to help her create a blog just for and about her and other canines. She says she wants to spotlight dogs like her. So there is no time like the present to start the New Year off with www.Zoeytherescue.blogspot.com

Zoey wants to remind you that there are tons of animals that need a FUREVER home. Also shelters need donations not only monetary but many other items too. She says to take in consideration that there are lots of humans who donate to wonderful, much-needed causes to help humans but there is not enough humans that donate to help save animals.

Maxx proved he was still a hero

This is not a recent event. Please see link at the bottom of article. The story is about a dog who did an amazing act to save his family in 2016.

Retired police dog proves he’s still a hero
when toddlers are trapped inside burning home

By Faith Tap / January 7, 2020 /Reprinted from Facebook

Yes, dogs are amazing, brave and selfless creatures. But Maxx must be the most amazing, bravest and most selfless dog of all.

For many years, Maxx served with the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office Police Department. During his career, he helped his human officers maintain law and order.

On many occasions, Maxx had chased down dangerous criminals, uncovered vital evidence and kept people out of harm’s way.

When it came time for Maxx to retire, his fellow officers thought that he was putting the heroic life behind him. But it turned out that they were wrong.

An investigator at the police department, Margo Feaser, and her husband adopted Maxx. Margo realized that despite all that Maxx had seen, he was still a loving animal. Pretty soon, the family learned that Maxx was also incredibly loyal and protective. Whenever there was a loud noise, like a firework, Maxx wouldn’t hide. Instead, he would guard his humans, determined to keep them from any harm.

And when Maxx’s owners made their family larger, his loyalty and love went out to the new family members.

The owners had a baby, and Maxx instantly fell in love with the child. At nights, he would choose to sleep next to the child, deterring anyone and anything from harming him.The owners then had another child. And even though Maxx was getting old, he was determined to extend his love and protection to both children.

Maxx’s owners thought that their dog’s loyalty to their kids was adorable but overblown. They reasoned that they were far away from any dangers. But one day, Maxx’s extreme level of protection paid off.

One evening, Maxx was guarding the children’s room. The children were now aged two and four. Everyone was slumbering softly, even the dog. But then there was an incredibly loud bang.

A freak gas explosion caused the home to set on fire. The bang woke the parents and toddlers up. They were all trapped in an inferno that had been their home.

Luckily, the explosion was so loud that the family’s neighbors had also been woken up. They called 911 and investigated the home.

The neighbors could see that the family members were trapped inside the blaze. So the neighbors assisted Margo in getting out of the home through a window. But Margo’s husband, two young children and dog were still trapped.

Soon, the firefighters arrived at the scene and started to tackle the blaze. With the flames dying down, Maxx emerged from the smoldering building, dragging the two-year-old with him.

The toddler was crying and scared, but it was obvious that thanks to Maxx, he would be all right. But Maxx wasn’t done yet.

He ran straight back into the still-burning home. This time, he managed to drag out the four-year-old. The four-year-old was unconscious but still breathing.

Then, when the firefighters entered the home, Maxx ran back in with them, guiding them to the location of Margo’s husband. The dog was not strong enough to drag a grown man to safety, but he knew that the firefighters could.

Outside, Margo’s husband was soon revived. The entire family was alive thanks to Maxx’s bravery.

Maxx was not unscathed from the fire.

He suffered from smoke inhalation and a burned paw, and while the four humans were at the hospital, Maxx was at the veterinary clinic.

Luckily, Maxx and his human family members all made a swift recovery. They are now living in a new home. And the family members all feel safe with Maxx around!

National Love Your Pet Day

Reprinted from my Face Book page

On February 20th, pet lovers everywhere observe National Love Your Pet Day.  This holiday focuses on giving extra attention to our pets.  The day encourages pampering our pets and focusing on the special relationship pets hold in our lives.

Did you know that most households in the United States have at least one pet?  While there are more cats than dogs in the United States, more households have dogs than cats, but not by much. Pets are not limited to the canine and feline categories.  There are quite a few who prefer the companionship of birds, reptiles, fish or rats.  Whoever your pet companion is, we are sure you will enjoy spending a little extra time with them on National Love Your Pet Day and reap the benefits, as well such as stress relief and lower blood pressure.  So on February 20 (and every day) show your appreciation to your pets!

HOW TO OBSERVE #NationalLoveYourPetDay

Bring your pet a special treat, take an extra-long walk or give them more attention. Other ideas include:
  • Check that their vaccines are up to date.
  • Watch a pet video with them full of cats, dogs and other critters.
  • Give them a few extra strokes with the brush while grooming.
  • Practice their favorite commands – sit, shake, rollover.
  • Play their favorite game or bring out their best toy.
  • Inspect their toys to make sure they’re in good shape. Throw out any broken toys.
  • Wash their bedding, even if it’s not their laundry day. Let them fluff it up just the way they like it.
Whatever you decide to do, spoil and appreciate your pets!  Use #NationalLoveYourPetDay to post on social media.

It's my birthday!

Happy Birthday to me, Happy 7th birthday to me!

Of course, we don't know my real birthday because I am a rescue pup who became very fortunate when Danielle picked me up in a snowstorm on December 10 in upstate New York and dropped me off at her in-laws' house. Mamma and Dad celebrate my special day in February because the vet estimated I was 10 months old when I arrived at my new shelter.  At the time though, I was skeptical about me staying because I kept hearing the words "foster," "just for a short time," and "we will find a home," etc. These were not warm and fuzzy phrases and I didn't like hearing them. On top of that, Mama kept talking about her Sierra girl. For the life of me, I couldn't find another animal living in the house no matter how hard I searched. And I could not smell another dog and I know my nose was in excellent working condition!. She just kept saying all these wonderful words describing this other dog that I couldn't find.  As time went on, I realized Mama's heart was broken because her beloved Sierra passed away. She claimed Sierra was her best friend and the most amazing dog in the universe. I thought, who could ever live up to Sierra? Not me for sure.  I knew I could never replace Sierra so I didn't even try. Hey, after all, we are two different dogs and I have to be true to myself and not put so much pressure on me! After much consideration, I decided I was just going to be on my best behavior so I could convince Mama and Dad to keep me and fall in love with me. Now I am not barking any lies here, there were some trials and tribulations and there still are a few we are still working on. I never said I was a perfect pup. I am a work in progress just like humans.

Now on my 7th birthday I can gladly say we are lucky to have each other. I keep Mamma and Dad walking a few miles per day. I bring life into the house, without me it would be so quiet. I have to admit I am one vocal canine, which I wasn't in the beginning because I didn't find my voice until I felt comfortable in my new home. I think the very best feelings in the world are love and security, which everyone needs and deserves to have in their lives. I hit the jackpot when Danielle carried me in the snow! Mama, Dad, and I  share lots of love and we protect each other. No one comes between me and my family!

Thank you Danielle💖

My new dad

Reminder: xylitol is toxic for dogs

Reprinted from Facebook post

Xylitol Is Toxic To Dogs. ... Because it's such a strong stimulator of insulin release in dogs, it takes just a small amount of xylitol (0.1g/kg) eaten by a dog to cause a dangerous drop in blood sugar ("hypoglycemia"). Mild hypoglycemia will typically cause weakness and a lack of coordination.

There is a lot of information regarding Xylitol and dogs on the Internet. I came across this blog that is definitely worth looking at for more details.

See Poisoned Pets blog for important information. Mollie Morrissette, the author of Poisoned Pets, is an animal food safety expert and consumer advisor. http://www.poisonedpets.com/sugarless-gum-with-xylitol-the-toxic-bubble-poised-to-pop-on-your-pet-i-said-pop-not-poop/
